Quality of Air

The Institute for Public health of the Istrian Region, together with the Department for the Protection and the Improvement of the Environment, has been monitoring the quality of air since 1982.

Measurements were launched in the largest urban area, in the area of the town of Pula, and then the measurement stations were installed in other areas, especially in localities burdened with significant emissions of industrial facilities. For this reason, the number of measuring stations and the types of pollution indicators has been changing. 

Until 1997, monitoring of the air pollution was carried out by means of classical stations, and then the first automatic station was installed in the area of the Istrian Region and the Republic of Croatia. The station was installed by the Town of Pula, as a part of the programme of repairs in the locality of Fižela, a zone under the dominant influence of the emissions from the Cement Factory Pula.  

Since 2002, the region network has included automatic stations around thermo-electric power plant (TE) Plomin thanks to the ecological awareness of the government and thanks to their wish to introduce their work to the public in a transparent way.

TE Plomin d.o.o. installed the stations on the basis of conditions from the construction permit. The results from the measuring stations are gathered directly, near the plant in TE Plomin II, and on the server at the Institute, where they are daily checked and proceeded, especially if they surpass the border limits of the pollution of specific indicators. 

The Institute elaborates the results of the measurements, in accordance with legal regulations, and it sends the annual Reports on Monitoring Air Pollution in the Area of the Istrian Region from classic and automatic measuring stations to the Region. The Government of the Istrian Region analyses the annual reports and adopts the Conclusion.
